Artist Statement
The subject matter of my work is pulled directly from personal experiences, environment, and individual moments in time that have significant emotional impacts on my life. Through the use of animals, still-life, and landscape, juxtaposed with unrelated objects and symbols, I am able to communicate these personal relationships, experiences, and dreams in a conceptual and thought-provoking way. With this series of clues, I lead the viewer to an open ended place. The work is representational, colors are exaggerated, and materials are expressive. This, in relationship with the cast of characters, makes a playful point which can be interpreted in a variety of ways. While the narrative is important, the process is equally as critical. I work with thick, rich, paint and materials that hold luminous qualities. With layers upon layers of chunky paint, a space where drips are welcome, and pops of color that take the place of light -- these are my stories.
